There’s an App for That: Poacht

So turns out there are quite a few things you can do on the down low, including looking for a job without alerting your current employer you may be coveting greener professional pastures. And of course, this is 2014 and there’s an app for that…Poacht (available on iOs and Android) will let you do just that.

Basically, you call your price (read desired salary level, benefits and perks), and the app matches you to one of the registered companies. You can even schedule an interview with a single tap…Lazy job hunter, you’ve been served…

My $0.05: Great tool for a low down job hunt! Yet, basing a job search primarily on salary level could have the risk of limiting prospects. Well worth the try though…

What if you were given a career crystal ball to pick the perfect job for you? I mean, your dream job. The one that wouldn’t just be tailored to your preferences and qualifications, but would also match the particular way women conduct their job searches? Like Tinder for savvy career women…

There’s An App For That Professional Women Looking for their Prince Charming Perfect Career…

Turns out, there’s actually an app for that, and a pretty good one at that! The Savvy app targets experienced professional women, catering their content especially to them and the employers that would potentially hire them. It started out as an app called Poacht, where job seekers could anonymously input information about their desired positions and look through available openings.But when co-founder and CEO Maisie Devine started noticing the app’s popularity with women, she decided to pivot it towards women professionals, and renamed it Savvy.

When I first read about the Savvy app, I literally jumped in my career woman’s heels. It’s about time that the fact that women approach the job search process differently than men be acknowledged, and even better, catered to. “Women follow a different job search process. When a woman looks at a job description, she will apply only if she feels 80 percent qualified, whereas men feel comfortable applying if they’re only 20 percent qualified,Devine said in summarizing the app’s appeal. This alone makes the entire recruiting process incredibly gender-biased.

It’s A Win-Win for Professional Women and Companies…

In addition to helping women find the right career fit, this app also helps employers leverage the enormous high-potential pool of female talent that may be self-disqualifying. In addition to giving companies the opportunity to tap into the value of gender equality within their own walls…

All in all, this app is a win-win for both professional women, and companies alike. So next time you’re in search of a great career fit, or know a corporate sister who is, please share the wealth…

What other apps would you recommend for professional women?

There’s an App for That: Switch

If you’ve ever wondered how to apply the principles of fast-paced,. anonymous speed-dating to your job search, well…there’s an app for that. It’s called Switch, and it’s been dubbed by The daily Muse as the new Tinder for jobs.

What it does:Basically, it allows you to conduct your job search anonymously, without the stress of your current employer, clients, friends or acquaintances ever finding out. Not only are you able to check out job postings incognito, but you also get notifications directly to your phone every time a potential employer likes your profile, very much like “likes” on Facebook or “Favorites” on Twitter. And if sparks fly, Switch allows you to be put in direct contact with the recruiter in question. So i happen to be a hiring manager, consider your work made much easier…

My $0.05: Whether you are actively searching or passively job-hunting, Switch sounds like a great option to do the do under wraps (here’s another app for job-hunting on the down-low), and still keep abreast of great opportunities on the market. Great app!

3 Smart Ways to (Actively) Conduct a Passive Job Search

Professional times have definitely changed! Whether happily employed or looking for better opportunities out there, actively passive job hunting is definitely on the up-and-up! Everywhere you turn, Linked In profiles are being scrutinized, recruiters are on the move, and….there’s even an app for that! Actually, there’s a whole host of apps and startups wanting to hack your job search out there

I started my career at a time where the likes of Linked In weren’t all the rage just yet…You had to network the good ol’ way, making your own contacts and actively looking for your next paycheck. Quite different from these days, when employers are after candidates, and recruiters can hit you up on your Linked In profile at any time, luring you away to the next great opportunity, right? At a time when job ads are becoming seriously old school and social media is the new recruiting tool, even when you’re not looking (for a job, that is), you’re kind of looking…After all, 60% of Millenials stay at their employers less than 3 years, since all this actively passive job hunting has made job-hopping not only socially acceptable, but even makes sense nowadays.

1. Keep it Social! If your career were an attractive, strong body, your social media profiles, including your Linked In profile would be pretty strong muscles in it. So invest in a professionally looking photograph, put some effort into entering accurate information in your profile, seek recommendations and endorsements! Don’t forget to interact with others by returning the favor as well!

2.Get Involved! This is no time to shy away from big groups! Get involved in your industry’s associations and peer groups! If you’re an accountant, join the AICPA or NASBA, among others! Seek groups promoting your industry and cultivate a strong network of mutual recommendations, referrals, and “insider” opportunities!

3. Now become THE expert! Go a step beyond, and position yourself as an industry expert! Whether it’s through a blog, or by being active on social media, or even writing a book, you will benefit twice over by learning through research, and attracting recruiters and employers with your expertise.

Chime in! How have you been (actively) conducting your passive job search?

The 411: Weekly News Update

News round-up - huffingtonpost.com

News round-up – huffingtonpost.com

Happy Sunday!

Hope everyone is having a great week-end! Dear hubby’s stepfather came to visit all the way from the Cape-verde Islands, and we basically spent the majority of the week-end grilling, drinking wine, and yelling at the kids to stop digging out the worms. Hopefully, your week-end has been worm-free, and as you’re relaxing today, here is our weekly news update:

  • This week, Working Mother rounded up the list of 100 best companies to work for;
  • Forbes writes about the new mentor in the millennial workplace, and introduces their new e-book Their Roaring Thirties: Brutally Honest Career Talk from Women Who Beat the Youth Trap;
  • Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve heard about the absurdly inflammatory piece from the New York Times depicting Shonda Rhimes as an “angry black lady”! And you’ve probably heard the thundering response from the entire Internet, such as this one in Slate, or this one in Vox;
  • In women making headlines news, Bloomberg News writes that the Reynolds tobacco merger is the biggest deal every made by a female CEO (and we’re so giggling inside);
  • Meanwhile, Tech Times wonders if the movement to empower women online will work after all (hello pessimism);
  • In not so bright news, Inc. Lists the 10 dumbest (and funniest) corporate emails of all time;
  • Ever thought of making gender equality official? Well, Fastcoexist writes about the new stamp of approval for employers truly committed to gender equality (and yes, I’m jumping in place);
  • Fortune Magazine confirms women make groups smarter ( we did suspect it, but it’s making us feel all warm inside to read it);
  • Missing summer? Project Eve showcases 5 must-have apps to go from workaholic to beach-bound in no time;
  • Last but not least, The Corporate Sister ditches the motherhood penalty and instead recognizes that being a mom helps your career. Oh, and I also like the Poacht app.

Happy Sunday, and happy reading!
