Happy Sunday! Hope everyone is having a blessed morning. I woke up early today, quietly shuffled my way to the outside patio, in awe of the morning’s quiet perfection (read no screaming kids, loud TV or anyone requesting anything to ingest, destroy or use as projectile). And hopefully, you too have about 1 minute 3/4 of peace (feel free to expand your alloted window), of quiet and serenity today to breathe…while laughing, smiling or just downing your cup o’ joe as you scroll through this week’s 411:
- One town name stood above all others this week in the news, and in our hearts. #Ferguson made my mind wonder and my heart ache, as I mourned Michael Brown as the young man who could have been my son, too. If amidst all the sad news reports, you, too, still can’t find the words to talk about Ferguson, please read these from The Root;
- My heart broke at the announcement of comedian Robin William’s passing this week, I’ve always wanted my own “Mrs Doubtfire”…Even for his last exit, Mr. Williams managed to teach us a slew of life lessons and make us smile through the tears, one among which around the pressures of success in the corner office;
- We’ve had to say bye to another Hollywood legend this week. Ms. Bacall embodied many things, among which “grown up”, classy, feminine style. In the words of The Washington Post, the world will miss the “confident swagger of the lady wearing the suit than the suit itself“;
- In women’s empowerment news, Glassdoor lists 10 reasons why women should support other women in the workplace;
- I breathed a sigh of relief when I read black women in the military won the Pentagon hair war;
- No college degree? No problem. Business Insider shares the 20 highest-paying jobs that don’t require a college degree;
- I had to do a double take on this Huff Post article on professionalism behind the wheel (I learnt to drive in Boston, ’nuff said);
- Ever thought of selling your used clothes? Pop Sugar teaches us how to actually make money selling our used clothes;
- Worried about Feng shui? Worry no more, instead worry about how your windowless office is decreasing your productivity;
- Last but not least, The Corporate Sister has a few pointers on how to write more concisely at work (you’re no Jane Austen), and how to fight machismo when working abroad.
Happy Sunday, and happy reading!
The Corporate Sis.
