Here we go again…We’re getting to the time of year when New Year’s resolutions are the talk of the town world…There’s even a science behind it…From how to nail our financial resolutions to dragging our behind to the gym, ‘Tis the time for (failed) resolutions of all kinds.

Yet, given that only 8% of people follow through on their New Year’s resolutions, is it even worth making them just to break them (and get even more discouraged?). Especially when it comes to our careers, many aspects of which, to be quite honest, none of us can control. Like your boss’s mood, whether or not he/she hates you (and how much), or how skilled you are at political BS at work…Oh yes, you can certainly work harder, better and faster, but you’re still subject to a host of external factors outside of your control…

Instead of making resolutions you’ll only get better at breaking anyways, here’s what your career may need instead:

1. Stop promising, start acting! Enough promises to do this, that or the other thing! Just act on it now! Attend more networking events, seek a new mentor, get that certification, just do it!

2. Break the mold! Do things differently! Throw away the old resolutions and start fresh! Whatever feeds your soul and makes you a better person, do that!

3. Don’t look back! New resolutions imply comparing the old with the new. Instead of looking back, decide to draw a line in the sand and forget about the past. It’s a new start!
