Raising Diversity Awareness at Work (Without RaisingTension)

embracethecurl.com

Happy Wednesday! It’s hump-day, this week is flying by, which in some ways is a good thing (and in some others, not such a great thing, as there is still more work to be done)…

When it comes to raising racial awareness at work, many of us get a bit dubious as to how it can even be done. After all, we are all professionals, and especially as minorities in the corporate world, challenging pre-conceived notions can be threatening to our careers and…our paychecks!

Yet, one of the first steps in lessening the gender and racial divide at work is to raise awareness. As many of ours and others’ implicit (and explicit) biases are buried deep within a lack of awareness, bringing the issue to the forefront is a powerful remedy! Yet, how is one to go about changing the status quo, especially as a minority in the workplace?

. Speak Up! Our voices are powerful motivators, yet unfortunately often lack in the corporate conversational landscape. Don’t wait for someone else to voice their opinion, speak up about what matters to you and how you better fit in to the organization!

. Show Up! One of the best ways to raise gender and racial awareness at work is to simply…show up! Be there, be actively present at meetings, team events and gatherings. Do not just hide at your desk until payday and disappear again! Sporting your natural crown of hair? Show up with it, and bring a positive attitude along! Are you the only minority in your team? Don’t miss an opportunity to show your face, and speak up!

. Dare to bring a different perspective! There’s a reason why teams are put into place: to challenge the status quo and bring different perspectives together. So bring your differences and perspectives, and dare to present who you are! You might just pleasantly surprise yourself…and others!

How are you raising diversity awareness at work?

It’s coffee break time, and as you are pondering whether you’ll make it to the gym or not, we may have something that may put some pep in your step…Something like this Aventura tank top from Fabletics!

I stumbled upon a Fabletics commercial the other day, and decided to check it out! Absolutely love this line of sportswear for its comfort and understated elegance! Yes one can exercise and look elegant, preferably without any hanging body part anywhere…

That’s why we love this Aventura tank, which is neither too tight nor too baggy, and is designed to actually go with your sports bra. It’s fitted enough to be flattering, yet breathable and comfy enough to give you room and flexibility. My favorite is this sweet pea burnout color. Check it out at fabletics.com, and see how you can become a member and get your own personalized outfits every month!

Coffee Break: Magneto App

Happy Coffee Break (I know, there isn’t such a thing…yet!)! Today, our water cooler convo is around the Magneto app, which we absolutely love!

Have you ever struggled to coordinate your various calendars, be they on Google or Microsoft Exchange? Well, struggle no more, the Magneto app, which was first introduced last February, helps you in doing just that and visualizing your entire day in a snap! Literally…

Not only does it help you sync your various calendars, but it also allows you to input critical information such as meeting time and place! Additionally (and that is one of its greatest features), Magneto allows you to share your schedule with others, so that your own contacts can see empty slots on your calendar and schedule meetings with you! Others can also add comments to your calendar, and you have the discretion to block off information on your calendar so that your personal details are not shared! Can you say awesome?

Now you can be reminded to pick up the dry cleaning and print the quarterly report in one, multi-faceted, efficient platform, and go on about the rest of your life with much less stress…And if you also wanted to add your to-do list to your calendar, or know how long the travel time to your meeting is, or even when you should leave not to be late, done, done and done!

Geo Print Shift Dress – $140.99 – lordandtaylor.com

Hello Again…We are back for our Monday lunch break, with this geo print shift dress from Lord & Taylor’s! The ease and versatility of this shift dress is perfect for work and everyday wear, and definitely adds a feminine touch to any wardrobe! Love the simple rounded neckline, adorned with a discrete yet stylish keyhole cutout at the chest. The three-quarter length sleeves are summer appropriate and definitely office-friendly, while the banded hem nicely complements the knee length of the dress.

As for the geo print, definitely eye-catching, so I would keep the rest of the outfit in neutral colors and pretty low-key. Great dress! It’s on sale for $140.99  at Lord & Taylor’s.

Career and Giving Back

britnidanielle.com

britnidanielle.com

Happy Monday! Hope everyone had a great week-end, and all the dads out there were happily celebrated for Father’s Day! Ours on this side of the blogosphere was quite busy, and getting started on Monday morning is proving to be a bit challenging (what else is new…)…

Just like the concept of career and giving back! Stretched thin as we already are between our careers, families and personal lives, it can indeed be quite challenging to muster the time and energy to give back to others. Very often, giving back in a significant and substantive manner, as we tend to imagine we should, tends to be put on the back burner of our lives, until we reach that third or fourth phase of our lives, after the kids are gone and retirement is in full swing.

Yet, as the famous adage suggests, why leave something for tomorrow that can be done today? Why not integrate our future plans of giving back into our current lives, and more specifically our careers? Especially as corporate sisters, we often struggle with our ambition, our family and personal obligations, and our strong, nurturing desire to give back. So how do we combine career and giving back?

1. Volunteer at work! Scour the opportunities to give back at work, and volunteer during work hours! Not only do these hours actually count at work, but they also greatly benefit your career by providing added exposure and increasing your chances of getting a promotion!

2. Mentor a sister (or brother)! Use your current experience at work and in life to be a source of inspiration for a younger future corporate sister (or brother). Sign up for The Big Sisters association, or commit a couple of hours a week to mentor a young person in need in your neighborhood. Not only will sharing and giving back of what you learnt fulfill you, but it will also greatly increase your skills as you keep learning as you teach!

3. Create career opportunities right where you are! Short of ideas or time on giving back. We’ll, create them! Have you spotted an important area where additional work is needed? Suggest a new opening to your management. Seen an opportunity to add value to your department or company by taking a few employees under your wing and mentoring them? Way to give back!

How are you combining your career and your duty to give back?
