Is Menswear Appropriate for the Office?

Last week, men’s runway shows were all the rage in London. And that got us wondering about menswear at the office. Is it appropriate to sport menswear at the office, and if so, which pieces are best suited for work environments?
Well, I do think menswear is not only uber-fashionable when worn the right way, but can add style and pizzazz to any professional wardrobe. These are my favorite menswear-inspired pieces for the office:

  • The Blazer: If you couldn’t tell, we are very much into blazers (please check out
    Trouve Blazer - Nordstrom - $65.66

    Trouve Blazer – Nordstrom – $65.66

our post on Being Mary Jane fashion featuring the blazer). For our pick, we saw this Trouve three-pocket blazer from Nordstrom on MSN that just made us gasp (in a good way!). With skinny elongated lapels and three welt pockets, this blazer is the epitome of the minimalist modern look. It’s now $65.66 at Nordstrom, down from $98!

  • The Bow-tie Blouse: Another of our favorites when it comes to menswear is
    Dorothy Perkins pussybow blouse - $44 - polyvore.com

    Dorothy Perkins pussybow blouse – $44 – polyvore.com

the traditional blouse adorned with an elegant bow- tie or pussybow. it gives any blouse a nice retro, menswear-inspired feel, while still being ultra-polished for the office. Pair it with a pencil skirt, or dressy trousers, and you’ve just turned the menswear trend into into your most professionally elegant style. For our pick, check out this Dorothy Perkins white long-sleeve pussybow top we found through Polyvore.com. At $44, it’s an inexpensive and pretty stylish buy.

  • The Patent Loafers: Last but not least, our last menswear-inspired piece we’d
    Liz Patent Trotters - 6pm.com - $36.99

    Liz Patent Trotters – 6pm.com – $36.99

recommend for the office is the patent loafer. Now some of you may be hesitant when it comes to sporting flats at the office, and even more hesitant when it comes to patent loafers. Being on the short side height-wise, and while I do favor heels most of the time, for those days when I do sport flats, I do tend to reach out for my favorite loafers. They are perfect with dressy tapered pants, or even a nice skirt set or casual skirt. They look very professional while adding comfort to style. We’ve found our pick through MSN: these Trotters Liz Patent at 6pm.com are not only sleek and stylish, but also boast a cushioned leather footbed which promises nothing but comfort! At $36.99, they are a steal!

Do you think menswear is appropriate for the office?

Working Week-Ends? What to Wear…

Working week-ends? Well, it’s the week-end, yes! BUT…it’s also time to wrap up those year-end financials, close on the last quarter of 2013, which for many means….going to the office on the week-end! Working in the office outside of the 9-to-5 usual timeframe can bring quite a few wardrobe dilemmas and mishaps, so for those among us who’ll be commuting in this week-end and the next few week-ends (sigh!), here are a few wardrobe options that won’t make you look like you just rolled out of bed in your favorite (but oh so unflattering) sweats…

  • The Structured Yet Fun Jacket: for the week-end at the office, you can still be
Structured Jacket The Limited - $64.80

Structured Jacket The Limited – $64.80

comfortable in professional style, pairing your nice jeans (please leave your ripped jeans at home) with a nice tailored jacket with a bit of an edge. We found this textured striped one button blazer that just made us gasp in fashion pleasure! It’s distinguished yet fresh, and is on sale for $64.80 at The Limited. Added bonus: this chic jacket can certainly transition from your week-end jeans-combo to any weekday outfit! Did you say be-au-ti-ful?

  • The Comfy Sweater Coat: If you need an added layer for warmth, and really do
Sweater coat - Jessica London -

    Sweater coat – Jessica London – $54.99

not feel like sporting your winter coat on week-ends at the office, the sweater coat is a nice, comfortable, yet still polished enough for work alternative. For our purposes, we’ve selected this elegant and colorful plus-size sweater coat from Jessica London. I love the burnt orange color, the straight silhouette and cowl neckline, which all give this coat a modern yet classic allure. At $54.99, it’s a good buy and comes in pine green, dark red, and coffee bean, all in plus sizes.

  • The Stylish Peacoat: For warmer winter days, the peacoat is also a great
Trina Turk "Abby" Peacoat - Nordstrom - $259.90

Trina Turk “Abby” Peacoat – Nordstrom – $259.90

alternative. It’s more casual, but still sophisticated enough. It can also showcase a nice pair of jeans and elegant boots (please know your office), without seeming overly stuffy or extremely casual. For our pick, we’ve selected the Trina Turk “Abby” zip peacoat, available at Nordstrom. It is a bit on our higher price end (we like to keep our fashion picks within the affordable range), at $259.90 (down from $395 though). With cozy rib-knit collar edged with lambskin leather and a cutaway, asymmetrical-zip front, it is definitely on the modern side of the fashion spectrum range! But we love love the look, edgy but modern and professional, the right compromise between your traditional 9-to-5 style and your more laid-back week-ends at work!

What would you wear to work at the office on week-ends? Please chime in!

Week-End Crush: Elisabeth & James Northern Star Cross Band Ring

Jewelry: Elizabeth and James Ring - shopbop.com

Elizabeth and James Ring – shopbop.com

When it comes to jewelry, I tend to err on the side of conservatism, favoring little jewelry if any. Especially for work, I do recommend subtle, delicate jewelry that would not take the focus away from you and your work (know your office).

Yet I was pleasantly surprised with this white-topaz encrusted Elisabeth & James Northern Star cross band ring. It’s simple and understated enough, yet still sports an original design with its geometric shape! It’s $150 at shopbop.com, and is a nice work and play splurge (hint, hint)…
