4 Smart Ways to Prepare for Any Networking Event

4 Smart Ways to Prepare for Any Networking Event

4 Smart Ways to Prepare for Any Networking EventYesterday, I dropped off Dear Daughter at her first day of camp, ever. As I dropped her off, I could sense she was a bit nervous. She had no idea what to expect, and frankly, neither did I. After we did the preliminary registration on-site, she was off on her own. I watched her from the car walk alone to a corner and sit all by herself. Typical case of networking 101, the 7 year-old version…

As I drove off that day, I couldn’t help but think how we learn very early on to avoid networking situations. Whether on the playground, at the party, or in the meeting room, how we approach networking situations at 7 or 77 years old ends up following pretty much the same rules.

As an introvert, I know how the concept of networking can sometimes feel like a mix of breaking in hives and eating fat-free ice cream. The mere thought of meeting a bunch of new people you’ve never seen, and actually having full conversations with them, can make anyone want to reach out for full-fat sea salt caramel ice cream. Unless you’re willing to put in a bit of work, prepare and handle each networking event as an opportunity to better yourself, expand your horizons and grow your brand…

Here are 3 tips to help you get prepared for any and all of your networking events:

OWN YOUR MESSAGE

The point of networking is to share your message and receive others’ messages as well. Yet for this, you have to intimately know what it is you’re bringing to the table. I used to go to networking events with no clear picture of my strengths, and the opportunities I was seeking. While I got to meet a lot of interesting people, I still missed out on leveraging these encounters and turning them into more fruitful relationships, whether personal or business-wise.

Prepare your own elevator pitch that captures your message, and that you can quickly present to any contact you make. Are you looking to grow your business? Or are you interested in making connections with your peers of the same industry? Are you a great writer, an innovative researcher, or the champion for a cause? What are your interests and strengths? What opportunities are you looking for? When these questions are unanswered in your own mind, you end up networking without a purpose. And while you can still make great connections, your impact as a result is lessened.

HAVE A MENTAL DISCUSSION LAUNDRY LIST

I’m not a “small talk” kinda gal. I like intentional, meaningful conversations. Yet in networking settings where you very often meet people for the first time, conversation starters are a must. Finding topics to discuss other than the usual “What do you do?”, or “Where did you go to school?” was always a bit of a challenge. While I didn’t want to dive in headfirst into weather talk, I still had to find a way to start and at times maintain the conversation. So I made up my own…

If you’re not into small talk yet would like to show up to networking events prepared to build meaningful connections, prepare ahead of time your own laundry list of topics to discuss based on your own interests. If you’re into fashion, why not pay the person you’re speaking with a compliment and ask about their style at work or in their business as a conversation starter or filler. Or you can bypass the weather talk and instead ask about someone’s personal interests outside of work, the kind of sports they play, or their favorite TV shows. Not only do these help you know (and remember people more), it also helps breaking the “networking ice” without having to repeat 10 times over how nice the weather has been lately…

DO YOUR NETWORKING DUE DILIGENCE

One of the very first networking events I attended ended up being a disaster, as I showed up at a different location first. I had no idea what the topic would be and who’d be in attendance. I was still in college, and the whole experience left me with a sour “networking” taste in my mouth. Since then, I learnt to do what one of my mentors calls your “networking due diligence” before each and every networking event.

That includes a few quick, yet necessary checks before the big day:

  • Knowing the location of the event (and if it’s a particularly important networking event, actually going there beforehand to make sure);
  • Checking the list of attendees at the event (if you can’t access a guest list, the alternative is to come in early and ask the organizers who will be in attendance);
  • Printing and bringing business cards, if you’re planning on distributing any;
  • Bring a spare name tag (in case something happens and yours isn’t available or lost).

HAVE A FOLLOW-UP PLAN

While you may think the event itself is the most important part of networking, the follow-up part actually determines if it was a success or not. Hence the importance of tracking the contacts you made in the process. You can do this by asking for a business card, or at least an email address. Having a system to organize these contacts at home is also a great way to keep track of your new connections. I personally use a “networking spreadsheet”, where I organize contacts by industry and field.

In addition to systematically and strategically storing your networking contacts, having a follow-up plan is also crucial. Whether it’s following them on Linked In, or sending them a quick email, or both, have an approach to continue the relationship you started. And if you can make your approach as personalized as possible, like sending an email reflecting your brand, business, or company, even better…

What Father’s Day Means For Women Who Grew Up With Absent Dads

What Father’s Day Means For Women Who Grew Up With Absent Dads

What Father's Day Means For Women Who Grew Up With Absent DadsEvery year for Father’s Day, I call my dad. Like so many other people celebrating this holiday, I’m blessed to still have him around. Yet for me, and for so many others, Father’s Day has this bittersweet taste stuck somewhere between our hearts and minds. That bittersweet feeling you have when dad wasn’t there…

For so many women, growing up without a dad present is reality. One they’ve been accustomed to living with, and suffering the consequences of. Some of these consequences are more visible than others, like for instance, according to the Fatherhood Factor site, ” a study of 263 13- to 18-year-old adolescent women seeking psychological services found that the adolescents from father-absent homes were 3.5 times more likely to experience pregnancy than were adolescents from father-present homes”. Others hide beneath the surface, revealing themselves through women working tirelessly to please everyone, be accepted, and receive the love they missed as a child.

These may be the women who log in countless hours at work, silently toiling in their careers to prove their worth; yet never satisfied, however much success they end up garnering…The women who’d never want to depend on a man for fear they’d be disappointed. The ones who seek validation in all the wrong places, sometimes settling for less they deserve because somehow somewhere along the way, they were robbed of one of the essential pieces of a woman’s life: a dad’s unconditional love and validation…

And this also deeply affects the types of careers we choose throughout our lives. We already know about the confidence gap; but what we don’t often realize is all the ways in which our dads, especially the absent ones, affect our work and purpose in life. From speaking up at work, to whether we see ourselves at the top of the corporate ladder or in a low-paying job, the relationship we have with our fathers play a huge role in how we see ourselves, in life and at work.

For those of us who grew up with absent dads, it also means we have to learn self-worth and value on our own…It means confronting our own limiting beliefs and mindsets, and being willing to change them for the best.

It took me decades to realize the impact of not having a father around for most of my life. Decades to realize that although my mother did an absolutely phenomenal job with all of us kids, there was a  space she couldn’t fill…A space that I had replaced with a  lot of things, time, and relationships which weren’t exactly for me…And that’s where my own journey of self-discovery and self-affirmation really started, one that’s painful at times, but oh so rewarding… A journey that helped me define my career in terms of who I am, and not the opposite way…And define everything in my life in terms of who I was made to be…

Throughout this journey, I’ve had the privilege to meet other women who also were on the same path. As we spoke and shared common insights, we were able to change the way we viewed ourselves, which in turn changed the direction and impact of our careers. Some of us shed the fear of speaking up, others finally confronted their dads, and others are making major changes in their careers and lives…Out of this shift, businesses were born, associations were made, separations happened, and overall, life changes happened…

If you’re a woman who grew up with an absent father, today and every Father’s Day may feel a bit strange. Like a pull between who you were and who you’re becoming…A reminder that while things are not always perfect, they always teach us a valuable lesson…And maybe you’re seeing all the ways in which your own experience has affected your career and life, and you’re ready to change that…

As for me, I’m still on this journey, and am amazed by all that I’m learning…I’m thankful to be blessed with a wonderful husband and father to my babies, and my relationship with my dad is getting stronger by the day…And I’m off to celebrating not just the fathers in my life, but the journey they’ve all helped us undertake…

Happy Father’s Day to all!

Love,

The Corporate Sis.

Corporate Catwalk: Striped Linen Shirt

Corporate Catwalk: Striped Linen Shirt

Corporate Catwalk: Striped Linen ShirtIt’s not always easy to find versatile shirts you can dress up or down for work or the week-end. Except for this Zady striped linen jersey shirt, which also happens to be our Corporate Catwalk pick of the day! Loving the relaxed fit, classic stripe and contrasting pocket detail, which both make for a classic piece to wear all-year round as a layering piece.

What’s even more interesting about this shirt (and about most of Zady products), and made me pick it today, is how the company describes to us the process by which these are made. According to the website description: “The flax seed in these shirts is grown in Normandy, France, after which the flax fibers are brought to Bergamo, Italy where they are dyed, finished and spun into linen yarn. The linen yarn is transported to Barcelos, Portugal where the yarn is knit, producing the linen jersey fabric. At this point, the fabric is brought across the sea to North Carolina where we partnered with Opportunity Threads, a facility that has developed a successful worker-ownership structure, where the breathable, soft, nautical shirt is completed.” Great way to make us feel part of the whole creation!

For chillier offices in the summer, I’d layer this shirt under a linen cardigan like this one, or a relaxed navy blazer like this one.
