So we’ve talked about picking your employer, and how it’s more like a marriage (even if the brief, Vegas, drive-through style) than you’d care to think (really, it is)…Yet, when you’re sitting across from your potentially future boss, what makes you beam inside at the prospect of working with them? Or what particular attitudes or behaviors remind you of your soon-to-be ex-mother in law (ok, that was harsh)? Really, what makes you tick when picking a job, or tap your feet in a Hallelujah dance? Or do you just leave it to chance, or your daily horoscope predictions?
My $0.05: Predicting whether a job or not will be the perfect job is a pretty tall order. I know some people for whom their first hesitant choices turned out to be their professional loves. And I know others who still can’t believe what they signed up for…
Intuition plays a large role for me. If all the conditions are aligned, and my gut is in, it’s a good sign. At the end of the day, I’ve got to be able to go to bed, having answered at least two of these three questions: Is this a company I can work for? It this a manager I can report to on a really bad day? And, last but not least, can I do this job and go home better than I was the day before?

If your first interview is like your first date, then picking, and committing, to an employer should be like entering a…professional marriage. From the initial butterflies in your stomach, to your first project together and private water cooler convos, you are in it until death your two week’s notice do you part. In other words, pick your boss wisely!
Even in today’s Millenial generation, when job-hopping is considered acceptable (or even recommended), accepting a job still means committing, even if temporarily, to a work environment and lifestyle. My mother always says, “As an independent woman, your job is your first husband!” And since my second, human one has to cook for himself as it is, here are 3 reasons why you should think twice before you put that ring, I mean, that signature on the employment contract:
1. It’s about the right fit! Nothing like ill-fitted clothes to make you look, and feel, like something’s off. The same goes for a job. Even if you only plan to pass through, you’ll still spend full days of your full life there. Pick an organization that fits your values, beliefs and even personality. Or choose one that challenges them enough to make it worth your while. In any case, choose wisely!
2. You pick your boss! A good leader can turn a terrible place to work into a fulfilling, even inspiring environment. And a bad one…you know! Pay attention to behavioral clues during the interview process. Does your prospective manager barely let you speak? Does he not listen to what you have to say? Is he referring to the team a lot? Pick up on important clues, and ask her/him questions that matter to you as well.
3. Remember, breaking up is hard (and expensive) to do! Divorces are not only painful, they’re expensive! So is leaving a job. The emotional, professional and time-related energy spent on transitioning to a different job can be draining, and at times, even life-altering. Pick the husband, I mean, the job you may want to keep for the long haul (whatever long means to you).

The recent case of Ellen Pao had us thinking about implicit bias in the workplace. You know, the type of bias that is not documented in emails, work reports or performance reviews, yet is a constant stigma looming over women at work.
How do you prove non-documented, implicit bias? Many of us have experienced this type of bias that left us hurt and confused. It may even have cost some their careers, credibility and sanity for that matter.
My $0.05: Tread carefully here. Implicit bias is real, yet extremely difficult to prove. If you feel you’re being discriminated against in the workplace, your first bet should be to rely on concrete, preferably documented evidence.
In the absence of tangible evidence, you may want to seriously consider if you want to risk your career, or get out and seek a better environment.

I’m terrible at finding my way around places. Even with the most elaborate of GPS, I still manage to take the wrong turn, end up in the wrong state, or the right shoe store. Most of us have experienced that moment when you start asking yourself where you went wrong. Like when you pick a career or job and wake up one morning wondering if you missed a professional turn, and how to go back and fix it. And because we are not naturally good at knowing right off the bat what we’ll enjoy and what we’ll hate, we end up trying different directions. The problem is, when we land at the wrong destination (or shoe store), we tend to call it failure, get stuck there, and spend all our money, time, and hope.
The more we try to overcome this sense of failure, the deeper we sink, and the worse off the choices we make. And the bigger our tendency to pick the wrong jobs, then to frantically try to escape them, just so we can go on and pick another wrong job all over again.
These are a few ways to trick your mind into cutting to the chase and stop picking the wrong job (or shoe for that matter):
1. It was never about the job! Stop thinking it’s about the right job, the right career, or the right brand of GPS (I bought the best out there, and still got miserably lost). There’s no right career path, and you can always find a better shoe out there. It’s about you, who you are, what you believe in, and how much you want what you want. Until you have clarity as to that stuff, you’ll be stuck, even if you look successful where you’re stuck.
2. Never buy at the first offer! In my home country of Senegal, purchasing anything without haggling is a capital sin. Most likely, even the nicest of sellers is trying to con you! If the item’s really worth 50CFA, they’ll start quoting prices at 100CFA. They use what scientists call “anchoring”, or the human tendency to make decisions based on the first piece of information received.
So next time you get ready to pick a job, take a detour into any West African market. You’ll probably get an overpriced item, and a lifelong lesson to make up for it.
3. Get the real deal! Some random guy once tried to sell me a contraband bag in Chinatown. He followed me for a whole hour, asking me if I wanted a Chanel bag. Of course I want a Chanel bag, who doesn’t want a Chanel bag? Out of curiosity, I followed him to some back alley, down some random, dark basement with dirty walls littered with fake Chanel bags. And I mumbled thanks and ran out, because I wanted a Chanel bag, but not one from a dark, scary basement with dirty walls…
It’s the same with wrong jobs. They look like the real deal, they may even feel like the real deal. Yet you’ve gotta get down to the basement, and check them out first. You’ve got to ask the right questions, get the real job description, and take a good look at your surroundings. Get your Chanel right!
